He put the shirt down, picked up the next one, and found the same answer under a different logo. He went through every shelf, every drawer, and every hanger. The country of origin rotated between the same four names regardless of the price. The realization arrived late: twenty years of paying for the illusion and ignoring the truth behind it. The investigation was over. The conclusion was not comfortable.

Everything shifted the morning he accepted that if the source was always going to be identical, the only variable left worth controlling was the distance. He located the local sweatshop and drove there the same afternoon. Left with a handshake and a bulk order. He considered it the clothing equivalent of buying from the farmers market and could not find a single flaw in the reasoning. The honest t-shirt for anyone who has ever followed the supply chain all the way to its source and decided proximity was the only ethical response left. Eight miles from his front door.
